This condition has caused absolute uproar amongst the injury claims community and is likely to continue causing confusion throughout 2007 and probably beyond. The argument placed by the defendant insurers is that Pleural Plaques which are caused by the effects of asbestos on the lungs do not pose any life threatening conditions, do not cause any visible injuries so therefore they should not be any cause for compensation claims.
This is a totally unprecedented situation where there are claimants seeking compensation for having literally no physical injuries! Pleural Plaques is a potential gold mine for the injury companies and solicitors alike but a severe nightmare for the insurance companies who could face billions of pounds worth of claims.
The debate on Pleural Plaques continues as two insurance giants, Norwich Union and Zurich go head to head against the claims industry in the House of Lords. This is an unfortunate position given the good relations that have been established over the past few months.
It appears that the innocuous symptom that is Pleural Plaques might just throw the whole claims industry back into turmoil.
