Fixed Fees for Medical Reports

One of the oldest and most infamous battles that has raged within the world of personal injury compensation claims has been the issue of medical reports and medical reports agency fees. This area of contention has been a big issue with insurance companies across the UK for nearly a decade but it looks as though a resolution is in sight.

The problem has always been the apparent extortionate ratio of the actual experts fee for producing the report against the levee of administration fees presented on top by the reporting agency who produce a revised invoice for the report. In cases of GP reports for instance it hasn’t been uncommon for experts to charge around £70 for producing a general practitioners report for that report to then be re-invoiced for over £300.

The tragedy in most instances has been the amount of referral fees involved in the whole process, with claims management companies and some solicitors getting in on the action of making that little extra. Medical Reports agencies have always felt the brunt of the process in most cases having to finance all the costs and also having to pay all the referral fees. After years of battling the insurance companies and third party cost negotiators it looks like the medical reports agencies might see some light at the end of the tunnel as fixed costs for medical reports have been agreed by all parties involved.

Representing the Medical Reports Agencies are AMRO (the Association of Medical Reporting Organisations) who believe the move to place a cap on charges will stop the contentions of costs for medical reports on GP reports, Accident and Emergency Reports and Orthopaedic expert reports. Whilst the move to fix and cap fees might seem a revolution in the outset the issue of referral fees might still cause contention for medical reports agencies who will no doubt have to accommodate the same and then there is the issue of experts fees, for sometime now experts have had to give in to extended credit terms and in some cases where medical reports agencies have collapsed experts have lost thousands in outstanding payments.

With the agreement on fixed costs being agreed this will undoubtedly mean earlier settlement for the report disbursement but will this mean earlier settlement for the expert who produced the report in the first place.
