Condition
Dislocations usually occur when the end of bones are forced or moved from their normal positions and this is often caused by some sort of trauma such as a fall or impact.
These injuries are very common during sports and may occur in major joints such as knee, hip, shoulder, elbow and ankle. They also commonly occur in smaller joints such as finger, thumbs and toes.
Dislocation injuries are painful and will temporarily deform and immobilise the joint. A dislocation requires prompt medical attention to return your bones to their proper positions.
Recognition
The main symptom of a dislocated joint will be the pain. The person will also have some deformity and swelling around the joint. In some cases there may also be numbness and weakness of the muscles around the joint.

Action
If you believe someone has dislocated a joint you should get medical help immediately. Don't move the joint until you receive help. Don't try to move a dislocated joint or force it back into place.
This can damage the joint and its surrounding muscles, ligaments, nerves or blood vessels. If possible put ice on the injured area as this can help reduce swelling by controlling internal bleeding and the build up of fluids in and around the injured joint.
