Condition
Fracture is the word used to describe a cracked or broken bone and these include a number of types of fracture such as a straight break, slanting, winding, longitudinal and comminuted fracture. The bone in children is softer and more able to bend than adult bone, so their bones often fracture on one side but bend on the other and this is called a greenstick fracture.
When a piece of bone detaches from the main bone this is called an avulsion fracture. When the bone collapses this is called a compression fracture and these usually affect the spongy bone found in the spine.
When the skin around a fracture has not been broken this is called a simple or closed fracture. Where the bone breaks through the skin this is termed an open or compound fracture, this is more serious as the bone is open to infection.
A complicated fracture occurs when there is also injury to nearby structures such as major nerves and blood vessels. Sometimes after a fracture broken fragments of bone separate and can be driven into another - this is called as an impacted fracture.
Recognition
Fracture symptoms depend on the severity of the injury and bone affected. The person may be experiencing pain and swelling and look pale and clammy and might also feel faint, dizzy or sick.
The part of the body may be bent at an unusual angle and they may not be able to put any weight on it. There may be bruising and discolouration and they may also experience a grating sensation.

Action
Unless it is absolutely essential you should not move a person who has a fractured limb. Call for medical help immediately where they will apply a splint to prevent movement of the injured limb and the joints above and below the fracture.
