Whiplash Compensation in the UK

04. 05. 2008 posted in: Whiplash Claims

Thousands of people claim whiplash compensation from road traffic accidents every year in the UK

Drivers and passengers alike can suffer from a multitude of injuries however the most common form of injury claims resulting from road traffic accidents are the whiplash compensation or soft tissue injury claims.

Whiplash gets its name from the way the injury occurs, which is the sudden movement of the neck backward and forward in a whipping motion. The skeleton and the soft tissue surrounding the bone of the spine are forced violently backward and forward with such force that massive trauma can occur. Even a minor impact can cause a painful whiplash injury and the symptoms can last for days, weeks or even months.

In severe cases the injured party can suffer on going symptoms and discomfort for years after the accident. Whiplash compensation claims are without a doubt the most common form of injury related compensation claims made following road traffic accidents, whether the impact is from the front or the rear the forces involved are immense.

It might sound somewhat strange to comment but the seat belt when worn correctly is very much a contributive factor in sustaining the whiplash as the body is suddenly stopped from moving forward. As the body is abruptly bought to a halt the head is still propelled forward at force until it is naturally whipped back onto the headrest. Many old cars were not fitted with headrests and this caused the head to be propelled much further back causing much more severe whiplash injuries.

It goes without saying however that whilst the seat belt assists in causing the whiplash injury it does in fact stop the driver or passenger from suffering other more violent and life threatening injuries if it were not worn at all.

Being propelled forward without any seat belt restraint can lead to the victim being thrown through the windscreen and in the instance of the driver can also lead to other severe or life threatening injuries from impact with the steering wheel.
